Mexico orders recall of Colgate Total Clean Mint due to potential health risk

2025-08-06·México·Cofepris·ver fuente original

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) issued a health risk notice ordering the recall of Colgate Total Clean Mint toothpaste. The measure was taken after multiple reports of adverse effects such as oral irritation, gum inflammation, tooth sensitivity, ulcers, canker sores, and allergic reactions.

The advisory was issued in early August 2025 and applies to all of Mexico. Cofepris asked distributors and points of sale to suspend sales and recommended that consumers switch to a safer formula. It also asked consumers to report any adverse effects.

Although the Mexican authorities have not publicly identified the responsible component, in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, stannous fluoride has been identified as a possible cause of the reported problems. This compound is used to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and tooth sensitivity, but it can cause side effects in sensitive individuals.
