Nepal's Parliament elected Pushpa Bhusal Gautam as its new prime minister on September 12, 2025. Gautam, 55, becomes the first woman to hold the position in the country.
The appointment came after Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli resigned following weeks of massive protests in Kathmandu and other cities demanding political and economic change. The demonstrations erupted into violent clashes with police, leaving at least 10 dead and hundreds injured, according to official figures.
In her inaugural address, the new president promised to open a process of national dialogue to address the protesters' demands and restore political stability. She also announced the formation of a provisional cabinet with multiparty representation.
International organizations have called for respect for human rights and restraint in the use of force during the protests in Nepal. The international community has recognized the appointment as a key step toward restoring confidence in the country's institutions.
