The climate is approaching irreversible tipping points, warns The Economist

The Economist, published on August 13, 2025, warns that the Earth is approaching irreversible climate tipping points. Among the most critical are the collapse of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, the disruption of the Atlantic Ocean Circulation (AMOC), and the collapse of the Amazon rainforest.

According to the scientists cited, at least 25 key components of the global climate system are at risk of abrupt and irreversible changes. Some could be triggered even by relatively low temperature increases, around 0.8°C above pre-industrial levels.

The report emphasizes that although some processes appear slow, such as the melting of Greenland ice, they can trigger sudden and unpredictable changes. This poses cascading risks to climate stability, ecosystems, and human societies.
