The event was classified as shallow and recorded with an instrumental intensity of VIII on the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98).
The earthquake was felt in nearby municipalities such as Bachaquero, San Timoteo, and Tía Juana, in Zulia state, and also reached parts of the Colombian Caribbean. In Puerto Colombia, Atlántico, residents reported feeling the tremor strongly, especially in multi-story buildings.
Instrumental intensity VIII corresponds to a severe level, at which considerable damage can occur to normal-quality buildings and partial collapses in vulnerable structures. According to the Colombian Geological Survey, this value is estimated from seismic records and wave propagation models.
So far, no casualties or significant damage have been reported in Colombia, although local authorities and risk management agencies are monitoring the situation to assess possible impacts in the border region and the Caribbean.
