Sharing legends with your family: tradition, fear, and fun

2025-09-17·Colombia·LedeLab

Legends are part of the cultural heritage passed down from grandparents to parents and children. They are stories that travel from generation to generation, steeped in mystery and oral tradition, strengthening identity and family ties.

When children are young, their imaginations bring these stories to life intensely. Some can be so frightening that, after completing a homework assignment about legends, they may ask to sleep with someone because they think they hear La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) or see the headless priest.

Not all reactions are fearful. Some children discover the curious or humorous side of stories like the one about the alligator man, which sparks more laughter than fear and becomes a fun memory within the family.

Sharing legends with children not only entertains; it also teaches, warns, and transmits values. Although they may sometimes cause sleepless nights, these stories fulfill their cultural role and keep the collective memory of people alive.
