Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina show progress in supporting democracy

2025-09-13·Internacional·DW

Colombia recorded an increase in support for democracy. According to Latinobarómetro, satisfaction with the functioning of democracy rose from 43% in 2023 to 48% in 2024. The International IDEA report also places the country in a medium-high range for judicial independence and local democracy, although challenges persist in political culture and economic inequality.

In Mexico, satisfaction with democracy reached an all-time high. 50% of respondents reported being satisfied in 2024, the highest level since 1995. Furthermore, preference for democracy over any other form of government grew from 35% in 2023 to 49% in 2024.

Argentina also showed a substantial improvement in citizen appreciation for democracy. Support reached 75% in 2024, a marked increase compared to the previous year. Analysts attribute this trend to the political alternation following the last presidential elections.
